Innovator's Dilemma - 48 years between invention and commercial use

Corning Inc (Corning Glass) developed a breakthrough glass in 1962 with strength that dwarfed standards of the day ... but for almost 5 decades there has been no meaningful commercial application ... until now. Corning's "Gorilla Glass" is right-place, right-time now and is poised to unleash billions with its virtually unbreakable, unscratchable glass that is perfectly suited for mobile devices, flat screen TVs and much more. Able to provide this protection with glass that's not even as thick as a dime, design and shipping are two of several areas that can realize flexibility and savings by incorporating this technology. Lesson for inventors? I can hear a few "I-told-you-so's" from the Gorilla Glass inventor(s) ... or at least their grand kids! There is opportunity for creative thinkers to shorten the intervals (between breakthrough and commercial use) on exceptions like Gorilla Glass, Faxing and other ideas that went to the back burner for years. (Impressive that Corning also managed the Gorilla Glass intellectual property for so long!) http://finance.yahoo.com/news/1962-glass-could-be-Cornings-apf-978849301.html?x=0
